US President Donald Trump has once again plunged himself into a political storm after endorsing a widely criticised social media post claiming Afghans would “chop off your head” if presented with a Nespresso machine. The remark comes at a time when the Biden-era refugee programme and Afghan resettlement in America are under renewed scrutiny following a deadly shooting involving a National Guard member.
The controversy erupted after former Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill—who is known for claiming he killed Osama bin Laden—shared a provocative message on X. In his post, O’Neill argued that Americans did not understand Afghanistan’s cultural landscape, alleging that Afghans would view a Nespresso machine as witchcraft and respond with violence. “But let’s bring ’em in!” he concluded sarcastically, signalling opposition to accepting Afghan refugees.
On Saturday, Trump reshared the post on Truth Social, just days after he halted all asylum applications and paused visa processing for Afghan nationals. His decision followed a shooting in Washington DC where two National Guard members—20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Sergeant Andrew Wolfe—were attacked. Beckstrom was killed in what Trump described as a “savage attack,” while Wolfe remains hospitalised.
The alleged shooter, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly entered the United States under Operation Allies Welcome in 2021, an initiative launched to evacuate Afghans who assisted US forces during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. The incident has since intensified scrutiny of vetting procedures and reignited debates over the long-term implications of the US exit from Afghanistan.
O’Neill’s comments, amplified by Trump, have drawn backlash for promoting harmful stereotypes. Critics argue that such statements risk deepening cultural divisions and overshadowing the complex realities faced by Afghan refugees who fled Taliban rule. O’Neill, a long-time Trump supporter, has previously defended the former president’s immigration restrictions targeting several Muslim-majority nations during his first term.
Meanwhile, the White House and law enforcement continue to grapple with the fallout of the DC shooting. DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro underscored the tragic timing, revealing that Beckstrom and Wolfe “were sworn in less than 24 hours before they were shot.” The attack has heightened public concern over both national security and the treatment of Afghan refugees, placing Trump’s latest remarks at the centre of a politically charged national conversation.
