Amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, Tehran witnessed a dramatic turn of events on Monday night. Social media platforms were flooded with videos showing packed highways and frantic citizens trying to escape the Iranian capital. This mass movement was reportedly triggered by a warning from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged civilians to evacuate immediately.
The latest wave of panic came after Israel launched a barrage of airstrikes on Iranian territory last week. The attacks reportedly targeted nuclear facilities, top scientists, and senior military officials. As the conflict deepens, fears of a wider regional war have escalated.
Trump, who posted the warning on his Truth Social account, stated: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”
He followed it up with a grim message blaming Iran’s leadership: “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again.”
The post seemingly triggered a wave of fear and chaos. Freelance journalist Thomas van Linge wrote on X: “#Iran: thousands and thousands of Iranians are fleeing #Tehran tonight following a post by Trump calling on residents to evacuate the capital. Many fear the US will join the Israeli attacks, which would be another extremely dangerous escalation.”
Others echoed similar concerns. One user, Kev Joon, wrote: “Spoke to my mom minutes ago. They’re leaving Tehran. Everyone is trying to leave Tehran. Whether they will be able to is a different question. The roads are packed to the point of literal non-movement.”
Tehran, home to nearly 10 million residents—equivalent to Israel’s entire population—is experiencing a panic not seen in decades. Viral videos depict a haunting reality: jam-packed outbound highways with bumper-to-bumper traffic, while inbound routes to the capital appear deserted.
This follows Israel’s largest offensive in recent memory, reportedly aimed at halting Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions. Although Iran has consistently denied it is building nuclear weapons, Israel’s military actions suggest otherwise. According to Israeli officials, the preemptive strikes were essential to prevent Iran from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
The violence has already resulted in significant casualties. Iran’s counterstrikes have reportedly left at least 24 people dead and more than 500 injured in Israel. On the other hand, Israel’s missile campaign has claimed the lives of at least 224 Iranians since last Friday.
The scenes of evacuation are eerily reminiscent of wartime panic. Tehran residents are scrambling to leave in whatever way possible—by car, buses, and even on foot—fueling speculation that further military escalation could be imminent.
While the Iranian government has issued no official evacuation order, the chaos indicates that civilians are responding to more than just rumors. The possibility of direct U.S. military involvement, as hinted by Trump’s statements, is also adding fuel to the fire.
The growing fear of a multi-front war—one involving Israel, Iran, and potentially the United States—has gripped the entire region. With over 10 million lives at stake in Tehran alone, the question remains: how far will this conflict go before diplomacy steps in?
