In a major breakthrough in one of the most audacious art heists in recent history, French authorities have arrested two suspects linked to the $102-million jewel theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The arrests, which took place on Saturday evening, mark a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the dramatic robbery that captured global headlines.
According to reports from French newspaper Le Parisien, one suspect was apprehended around 10 pm at Charles de Gaulle airport while attempting to leave the country. The second suspect was later arrested in the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb, located north of the French capital. Both men, believed to be around 30 years old, are thought to be part of a four-member gang responsible for the meticulously planned heist.
The robbery, which took place in a matter of minutes, saw the thieves steal eight priceless pieces from a first-floor gallery, including an emerald-and-diamond necklace once gifted by Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Marie-Louise. Authorities revealed that the gang used a stolen movers’ truck equipped with an extendable ladder to gain access to the museum. Investigators say the robbers then used a basket lift to scale the Seine-facing side of the building, broke open a window, and smashed two display cases.
Despite dropping one diamond- and emerald-studded crown during their escape, the thieves managed to flee on motorcycles before security could intervene. Alarms rang across the museum, and security personnel rushed to the scene, but the perpetrators had already vanished.
A Paris prosecutor, speaking to the Associated Press, confirmed that multiple suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the heist. However, the identities of those detained have not yet been released as questioning continues.
The daring nature of the robbery has drawn comparisons to scenes from a Hollywood film, with experts and the public noting the highly theatrical execution of the crime. Security analysts have raised concerns over how one of the world’s most famous museums could be infiltrated so quickly, highlighting the need for a review of museum safety protocols.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to track down the remaining members of the gang and recover the stolen treasures. The Louvre heist remains one of the most high-profile thefts in recent history, drawing intense international attention and speculation over the fate of the missing jewels.
