The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Sunday accused the Centre of failing to honour commitments made to end its month-long protest at Jantar Mantar, warning that it could launch another agitation if the government does not act on its assurances.
The online outfit-turned-pressure group said the Centre had made commitments to address the concerns of students and young citizens but had allegedly failed to follow through after the protest was withdrawn.
“We will not allow the Government to insult an entire generation by making promises to end a peaceful movement and then attempting to wriggle out of those very promises once the streets have emptied,” the CJP said in a statement.
A major point of contention is the status of FIRs registered against student protesters. According to the group, despite repeated requests from the court, the government has yet to provide a list of the cases that were to be withdrawn.
The CJP also alleged that no government delegation had contacted its representatives regarding progress on the commitments, including compensation for families of NEET students who died by suicide.
The group said any attempt to delay, dilute or reinterpret the assurances would amount to “vishwasghaat” or a breach of trust with the country’s youth.
The CJP ended its more than month-long protest on July 25 after announcing that its demands had been accepted by the government. The group said three major commitments were made.
These included maximum possible compensation for families of students who died by suicide in connection with the NEET paper leak controversy, withdrawal of FIRs filed by the Centre and NDA-ruled states against protesters, and consideration of the CJP’s five-point exam reform charter.
The group said it would meet on August 24 to decide its next course of action and urged students, supporters and volunteers across the country to remain prepared.
The CJP also claimed that the protests had resulted in the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while stressing that it would continue pressing the government until all commitments were fulfilled.
