Massive 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Shakes Thailand; Dozens Trapped in Bangkok

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar’s Mandalay region on Friday, sending strong tremors across the country and into neighboring Thailand. The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, was shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ Center for Geosciences. The epicenter was located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Monywa in central Myanmar.

Widespread Impact and Structural Damage

The quake caused significant structural damage in both Myanmar and Thailand. Videos circulating online show devastating scenes, including the collapse of an under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak Market, where at least 43 workers are believed to be trapped. Another shocking clip captured the iconic Ava Bridge, a historic structure linking Myanmar’s Ava and Sagaing regions, crumbling due to the tremors.

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention confirmed that the quake was felt in nearly all regions of the country, including the capital, Bangkok, and the northern city of Chiang Mai. Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, also suffered damage, with religious shrines and residential buildings affected.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents in both countries described the earthquake as one of the most intense they have experienced. A Yangon resident told CNN, “The shaking was extreme and lasted for three to four minutes. The building felt unstable.”

Another resident in Chiang Mai recounted their experience, stating, “I felt it for about 10 seconds, and then I realized I couldn’t stay inside. I rushed out onto the street.”

Aftershock and Safety Concerns

Just 12 minutes after the initial quake, a strong aftershock measuring 6.4 magnitude struck Myanmar’s Sagaing region, further intensifying concerns about safety and damage.

While no tsunami alert has been issued so far, authorities in both countries are assessing the full extent of the destruction. Rescuers are working to free those trapped in collapsed buildings, and emergency response teams have been deployed to affected areas.
