Kunal Kamra Faces Backlash from Shiv Sena

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has landed in fresh controversy following his satirical take on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During his recent show at Hotel Unicontinental in Mumbai’s Khar, Kamra modified a song from the Bollywood film Dil Toh Pagal Hai to allegedly mock Shinde without naming him directly. The joke, however, did not sit well with Shiv Sena leaders, who responded with threats and acts of vandalism.

Shiv Sena Leaders React Strongly

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut shared Kamra’s video on X (formerly Twitter), captioning it “Kunal Ka Kamal” (The wonder of Kunal). However, this seemingly lighthearted endorsement enraged the rival faction of Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde.

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske, in a scathing response, called Kamra a “contract comedian” and warned that the comedian had “stepped on a snake’s tail.” He further threatened Kamra, saying, “Once the fangs are out, there will be dire consequences.” Mhaske even suggested that Kamra would not be able to move freely in the country if Shiv Sena workers started following him.

Mhaske also alleged that Kamra had taken money from former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to target Eknath Shinde. “Uddhav’s party is now hiring such people since they have no one left,” he claimed.

Vandalism at Mumbai Hotel and Legal Action

The controversy escalated as Shiv Sena workers vandalized Hotel Unicontinental in Khar, where Kamra’s show was recorded. Videos surfaced showing broken property, with party members expressing their anger over the comedian’s jibe at Shinde.

Amidst the backlash, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel warned Kamra to apologize, stating he would file an FIR against the comedian at MIDC police station.

Sanjay Raut Slams Maharashtra Government

Following the hotel vandalization, Sanjay Raut condemned the actions of Shiv Sena workers and criticized Maharashtra’s Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis for failing to maintain law and order.

“Kunal Kamra is a well-known writer and stand-up comedian. He composed a parody song on Maharashtra’s political scenario, which irked the Shinde gang, leading them to ransack the studio. Devendraji, you are a weak home minister,” Raut wrote on X.

The Road Ahead for Kamra

Kunal Kamra, who is no stranger to controversies for his political satire, has not yet issued a public statement on the threats against him. However, given the growing tensions, legal action, and political drama, the controversy is unlikely to die down soon.

As Maharashtra’s political rivalry intensifies, the intersection of comedy and politics continues to be a volatile space, raising questions about free speech and political intolerance in the state.
