Dharmendra and Hema Malini’s love story remains one of Bollywood’s most talked-about romances. Their relationship sparked controversy, especially since Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur before stepping into the film industry. Yet, their journey—from a small-town tubewell fitter from Punjab to the silver screen’s Dream Girl—reads like a true Bollywood drama.
Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, hailing from Nasrali, Punjab, married Prakash Kaur in 1954 when he was just 19. Despite having four children—Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta, and Ajeeta—his destiny shifted when he won a Filmfare talent contest in 1960. This victory gave him a breakthrough in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and eventually led him to Mumbai, where he crossed paths with Hema Malini.
The 1970s marked the era of their on-screen magic. Dharmendra and Hema Malini delivered hit after hit in films like Sharafat, Tum Haseen Main Jawan, Naya Zamana, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu, Patthar Aur Payal, Pratigya, and the iconic Sholay. Rumors of their off-screen romance often accompanied their box office success. On the set of Sholay, their chemistry was palpable, even as Hema was recovering from a past relationship with Sanjeev Kapoor.
However, their love story faced significant hurdles. Hema Malini’s mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, disapproved of the relationship, partly because Dharmendra was already married. Hema’s parents even wanted her to consider Jeetendra as a potential match. Determined, Dharmendra flew to Chennai to confront the situation and openly declare his love for Hema. By 1980, after years of persistence, Hema reportedly gave Dharmendra an ultimatum to marry her, and the couple tied the knot on May 2, 1980. The news, when it broke, shocked many, and Hema recalled being labeled the “first lady of second marriages” in her memoir.
The couple welcomed their first daughter, Esha Deol, in 1981. To protect her privacy, Dharmendra reportedly booked 100 rooms in the hospital. Their second daughter, Ahana, was born in 1985. Despite rumors of extramarital affairs, such as reports of Dharmendra being involved with Anita Raj during Nauker Biwi Ka, he firmly dismissed them, emphasizing his devotion to Hema and their family.
