At the recent ASEAN meeting in Laos, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the critical importance of economic and security cooperation for India in its engagement with Southeast Asian nations. Emphasizing the need for robust strategic partnerships, Jaishankar outlined India’s commitment to fostering regional stability and economic growth through collaborative efforts.
Speaking at the ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting, Jaishankar underscored the multifaceted relationship between India and ASEAN countries, noting that both economic prosperity and security are intertwined in the current global landscape. “For India, economic and security cooperation with ASEAN is of utmost priority. Our shared objectives and mutual interests in these areas are essential for regional stability and growth,” he stated.
Jaishankar elaborated on India’s initiatives to enhance trade, investment, and infrastructure development in the region. He pointed to projects such as the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project as examples of India’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and economic integration with ASEAN.
“India is dedicated to increasing trade and investment flows with ASEAN, and we are actively working on infrastructure projects that will facilitate greater economic integration. Our goal is to create a seamless network that boosts economic opportunities for all our countries,” Jaishankar explained.
On the security front, the Indian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of maritime security, counter-terrorism, and cyber security cooperation. He highlighted India’s role in promoting a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region and the need for collective efforts to address emerging security challenges.
“Maritime security is a cornerstone of our cooperation. We are committed to ensuring the freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded commerce, and peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law,” Jaishankar affirmed. “In addition, counter-terrorism and cyber security are areas where we must enhance our collaboration to protect our societies from these evolving threats.”
Jaishankar’s address at the ASEAN meeting also included a call for deeper collaboration on public health, digital technology, and sustainable development. He reiterated India’s support for ASEAN’s centrality in the regional architecture and its initiatives for peace and stability.
“India stands with ASEAN in its vision for a resilient and prosperous region. We are committed to working together to address global challenges, from public health crises to climate change, and to harness the potential of digital technologies for inclusive growth,” Jaishankar concluded.
