Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made a compelling case for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) during the BRICS Parliamentary Forum meeting held on Thursday. Addressing delegates from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Speaker Birla emphasized the urgent need for equitable representation and strengthened multilateralism within the global body.
In his speech, Birla highlighted that the current structure of the UNSC does not reflect the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. “The UNSC must be reformed to include greater representation from developing countries and emerging economies,” Birla asserted. “This will ensure that the voices of all nations are heard and considered in the decision-making process, fostering a more balanced and just international order.”
Speaker Birla’s call for reform was met with strong support from other BRICS representatives, who echoed his sentiments on the necessity for an inclusive and democratic global governance system. The forum, which provides a platform for member countries to discuss and align their positions on various international issues, saw extensive deliberations on the role of BRICS in promoting sustainable development and peace.
Birla also underscored the importance of BRICS nations in driving global economic growth and addressing transnational challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and public health crises. “BRICS, with its collective strength and shared vision, can play a pivotal role in shaping a new world order that prioritizes cooperation over confrontation,” he added.
The demand for UNSC reform has been a longstanding issue for India, which has consistently advocated for a more representative and transparent global governance framework. Birla’s remarks at the BRICS Parliamentary Forum align with India’s broader diplomatic efforts to secure a permanent seat in the reformed UNSC, alongside other major emerging powers.
The BRICS Parliamentary Forum, held virtually this year due to the ongoing pandemic, concluded with a joint statement reaffirming the commitment of member countries to work collaboratively towards common goals. The statement also emphasized the need for continued dialogue and cooperation in addressing global challenges and promoting peace and stability.
