External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has assured Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin of prompt and decisive action to secure the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by Sri Lankan authorities. This assurance comes in response to an urgent appeal from Stalin, who emphasized the safety and repatriation of the fishermen.
The arrest of the Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy has sparked significant concern and calls for diplomatic intervention. The fishermen were apprehended allegedly for violating maritime boundaries, a recurring issue that has strained relations between the two neighbouring countries.
In a letter addressed to Jaishankar, CM Stalin highlighted the plight of the fishermen and the distress caused to their families. He urged the External Affairs Minister to engage with Sri Lankan officials to expedite their release and ensure their safe return to India. “The continued detention of our fishermen has caused immense hardship. We request your immediate intervention to bring them back home safely,” Stalin wrote.
Responding to Stalin’s appeal, Jaishankar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the issue. “We are fully aware of the situation and are taking all necessary steps through diplomatic channels to ensure the swift release of the fishermen. Their safety and well-being are our top priorities,” Jaishankar stated.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reportedly initiated talks with the Sri Lankan government, emphasizing the need for a humane approach and the longstanding ties between the two nations. “We have conveyed our concerns to the Sri Lankan authorities and are hopeful for a positive resolution soon,” an MEA official said.
The issue of fishermen straying into Sri Lankan waters has been a persistent problem, leading to frequent arrests and tensions. Both governments have been working towards finding a lasting solution, including the establishment of joint mechanisms to address the concerns of fishermen from both sides.
Political leaders and fisherfolk communities in Tamil Nadu have welcomed Jaishankar’s assurance but stressed the need for a permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future. “We appreciate the government’s prompt response, but we urge continued efforts to protect our fishermen and their livelihoods,” said N. Devadoss, a leader of a fishermen’s association in Rameswaram.
The recurring arrests have often led to protests and demands for stronger diplomatic engagement. Fishermen’s associations have called for clear maritime boundaries and better communication between Indian and Sri Lankan authorities to prevent misunderstandings and inadvertent crossings.
In the meantime, families of the detained fishermen remain hopeful for their loved ones’ safe return. “We are praying for their release and hope they come back soon. The government’s assurance gives us some comfort,” said Mary, the wife of one of the detained fishermen.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the focus remains on ensuring the immediate release and safe repatriation of the fishermen. The incident underscores the importance of robust dialogue and cooperation between India and Sri Lanka to address shared challenges and maintain harmonious bilateral relations.
