India-Brazil Strategic Partnership

During their bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reiterated their commitment to advancing the Brazil-India Strategic Partnership.

On Sunday, PM Modi and President Lula met privately outside the G20 summit in New Delhi.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also expressed support for India’s application for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 period.

PM Modi praised the joint statement between India and Brazil, which stated that Brazil would support India’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 period.

“Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brazil and India, celebrated in 2023, both leaders emphasized that bilateral ties have flourished based on common values and shared objectives, including the pursuit of peace, cooperation, and sustainable development,” the statement continued.

The two presidents reaffirmed their dedication to advancing the Brazil-India Strategic Partnership and maintaining their unique positions in international affairs. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the advancements made through various institutional avenues for communication.

The Security Council needs to be completely reformed to better meet today’s challenges to international peace and security. PM Modi and President Lula reiterated their commitment to this, including the expansion of the permanent and non-permanent categories with increased representation of developing nations in both.

Additionally, they reaffirmed their shared support for their nations’ permanent membership in a bigger UNSC.
Brazil and India will continue to collaborate closely within the G-4 and L69 frameworks, according to PM Modi and President Lula. Additionally, they decided to have frequent bilateral coordination talks regarding Security Council Reform.

Both leaders appreciated the G20’s successive presidencies by developing nations, which increased the influence of the Global South on global governance. They were pleased to see that the three IBSA nations formed a G20 troika under Brazil’s presidency.

A virtual G20 meeting would be held in November to discuss the recommendations and proposals made at the top forum for global economic cooperation, Prime Minister Modi declared earlier in the day.

Additionally, PM Modi gave him the ceremonial gavel for the Group of 20 chairmanship. The globe must step up efforts, according to the president of Brazil, if hunger is to be eradicated globally by 2030.
