Indian National Killed by Falling Missile Debris in Abu Dhabi Amid West Asia Conflict

An Indian national was among two people killed when debris from an intercepted missile struck Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday, according to local authorities. The incident, which occurred on Sweihan Street, also left three others injured, including another Indian national, an Emirati, and a Jordanian, with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.

The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed that the missile, intercepted by the UAE’s air defence systems, produced shrapnel that led to casualties. “Injuries ranging from serious to moderate have been sustained by three individuals of Emirati, Jordanian, and Indian nationality,” the statement said. In addition to the Indian victim, a Pakistani national also lost their life in the incident.

The Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi expressed profound sorrow over the loss and confirmed the fatality on social media. “Embassy of India expresses its deepest condolences at the tragic demise of an Indian national due to falling debris in Abu Dhabi today,” the statement read. Authorities in the UAE are reported to be coordinating with the Indian embassy to provide necessary support and assistance to the victims and their families.

This marks the first Indian death in the UAE since the escalation of military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran on February 28, which triggered a broader conflict across West Asia. The Indian government has been closely monitoring the safety of its citizens across the region, particularly in countries hosting large Indian expatriate communities. Saudi Arabia and the UAE together host nearly eight million Indians, part of an estimated 10 million Indian nationals living in West Asian countries.

The current conflict has already claimed several Indian lives in neighboring states. An Indian national was killed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 18, during missile and drone attacks. Two more Indians lost their lives in attacks on an industrial area in Oman on March 13, while three seafarers were killed in assaults on merchant vessels during the early days of the hostilities. Additionally, one Indian citizen has been reported missing amid ongoing unrest.

Dozens of Indians, including workers and seafarers, have been injured across multiple countries, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians amid the intensifying West Asian conflict. The Indian government continues diplomatic outreach to ensure the safety and security of its nationals, with special attention to providing support during emergencies in the region.

As the situation escalates, the UAE authorities and Indian embassy officials are closely monitoring developments to prevent further civilian casualties and provide timely aid to those affected by military operations in Abu Dhabi and other parts of the region.
