Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the continued detention of party co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, accusing the government of using state machinery to intimidate young protesters and suppress dissent.
In a post on X, Dipke said the two leaders remained determined despite spending five days in jail, alleging that their continued detention had failed to weaken their resolve. He claimed that both men appeared in court with smiles on their faces even after learning that their judicial custody had been extended.
“Ashu and Saurav’s first crime was waving the Tiranga at Jantar Mantar. Their second crime? Refusing to back down,” Dipke wrote.
Das and Ranka were sent to judicial remand for another two days after being produced before a newly appointed Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) at the Mandir Marg police station, according to an official. The two leaders are scheduled to be produced again on Wednesday, sources said.
Dipke Questions PM Modi Over Continued Detention
In a lengthy Instagram post, Dipke questioned the government’s decision to keep the two CJP leaders in custody, pointing to their ages and alleging that the authorities were attempting to project strength by detaining young protesters.
“The great Vishwaguru Narendra Modi must be feeling very strong keeping 26-27-year-old Saurabh Das in jail and keeping 30-year-old Ashutosh behind bars. This is what strength looks like? Hiding behind the police, hiding behind the courts—is this Narendra Modi’s strength?” Dipke said.
The CJP founder also alleged that the duo had not received timely hearings and that repeated postponements had delayed proceedings. He accused the authorities of employing delaying tactics to prevent their release, although these allegations have not been independently established.
Dipke described the conduct of the two leaders in court as a sign of resilience. Recalling an earlier conversation with Das, he said the latter had once told him that he would struggle to spend even a day in jail. However, Dipke claimed that Das remained composed after spending five days in custody.
“Real strength is knowing that you are fighting a power much greater than yourself. It is knowing what the consequences could be and still refusing to remain silent,” Dipke said.
He also spoke about his conversation with Das’s mother, claiming that she remained confident her son would not give up despite being behind bars. According to Dipke, the determination displayed by the families of both leaders demonstrated that the detention had not achieved its alleged objective of discouraging dissent.
He further argued that the continued custody of the two CJP leaders could encourage more young people to raise their voices against the government rather than deter them from protesting.
Why Were Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka Detained?
Das and Ranka were initially sent to five days of judicial custody on October 13 after allegedly climbing over a locked gate to enter Jantar Mantar, which had previously been denotified as a designated protest site.
The two leaders, along with other CJP workers, had displayed the national flag and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar before being detained and placed under preventive arrest.
The incident has since become the focus of a dispute between the party and the authorities, with the CJP questioning the legality of the detention and accusing officials of obstructing the leaders’ release.
CJP Alleges Deliberate Delays in Bail Proceedings
The CJP has alleged that the bail process for its two co-convenors was deliberately delayed to keep them in custody. The party also claimed that bail sureties submitted for their release were rejected on vague grounds.
The allegations come amid developments involving the Special Executive Magistrate hearing the bail matter. On Sunday, the magistrate reportedly claimed that unidentified individuals were threatening him, following which police registered a non-cognisable report.
In a post on X, Dipke accused the authorities of prolonging the detention by repeatedly delaying court proceedings.
“The state is deliberately prolonging Ashu and Saurav’s illegal arrest by using every dirty trick in the book to delay court proceedings and prevent their release,” he alleged.
He added that the authorities had no legal grounds to keep the two men behind bars and were relying on delays to extend their detention. These claims reflect the CJP’s position and have not been independently verified.
The controversy surrounding the arrests has intensified as the party continues to challenge the detention of its co-convenors. With Das and Ranka expected to appear before the authorities again on Wednesday, attention is likely to remain focused on the next developments in their custody and bail proceedings.
The CJP maintains that the detention will not silence its leaders, while Dipke has framed their continued resolve as a challenge to the government’s handling of dissent and peaceful protest.
