Iran’s Supreme Leader, 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly killed in a high-precision strike carried out using Israel’s advanced Blue Sparrow missile, a weapon capable of traveling to the edge of space before plunging back to Earth at extreme speed. The attack marks a dramatic escalation in Middle East tensions, as the US and Israel coordinate operations against Iran’s top leadership.
The Blue Sparrow missile follows a quasi-ballistic trajectory, climbing far above the atmosphere before descending steeply onto its target. This steep path minimizes reaction time for air defense systems, making interception almost impossible and allowing strikes on heavily guarded targets with precision. Fragments from the missile were reportedly discovered along its flight path in Iraq, indicating the route taken toward Tehran.
Originally developed as part of Israel’s Sparrow missile family—alongside Black Sparrow and Silver Sparrow systems—the Blue Sparrow was initially intended to simulate Soviet-era Scud missiles during defense tests. Over the years, it was adapted for operational missions. Measuring approximately 6.5 meters in length and weighing around 1.9 tonnes, the missile can travel nearly 2,000 kilometers and is typically launched from fighter aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle.
The strike targeted Khamenei’s heavily guarded compound on Pasteur Street, Tehran, where several senior Iranian officials were meeting. Satellite imagery and social media videos revealed significant damage to multiple buildings within the complex. Reports indicate that alongside Khamenei, several senior commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other key military leaders were killed. Some members of Khamenei’s family may also have been present during the attack.
The operation, codenamed Operation Epic Fury, was the culmination of years of intelligence gathering by Israel’s Mossad and cyber-intelligence unit, Unit 8200. Surveillance included hacking traffic cameras, monitoring communications, and tracking the movements of Khamenei’s security detail to map the “pattern of life” of Iran’s top leadership. Israeli planners carefully timed the strike for a rare moment when Khamenei and his officials were above ground, while cyber units disrupted mobile networks to prevent alerts from reaching security personnel.
This unprecedented precision strike demonstrates the integration of advanced missile technology, cyber warfare, and intelligence operations, signaling a new era in high-stakes Middle East conflicts.
