Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Congress, claiming that the party had historically burdened Assam with problems, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been focused on providing solutions and development for the state.
Addressing a gathering of BJP booth-level workers in the poll-bound state, Modi highlighted the party’s achievements in Assam and urged workers to ensure a third consecutive term for the BJP. “Congress always gave Assam problems. On the other hand, the BJP has provided solutions,” he said.
During his day-long visit to Assam, Modi inaugurated the northeast’s first emergency landing facility (ELF) on a national highway at Moran in Dibrugarh district. He personally witnessed an Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft land on the facility, marking a historic milestone for the region. The ELF, designed in coordination with the IAF, can handle fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes, making it a critical asset for emergency response, rescue operations, and national security in the northeast, located just 300 km from the Line of Actual Control with China.
Modi said, “When I landed on the ELF, it created a history for the northeast. Earlier, when people mentioned the region, they thought of broken roads. That was then, and this is the present.” He added that the facility reflects India’s commitment to national security and preparedness, noting that modern infrastructure along borders allows India to deter adversaries effectively.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Assam’s economic growth under the BJP, pointing to the upcoming semiconductor facility at Jagiroad and the increase in Assam’s share of central taxes from around ₹10,000 crore under Congress to nearly ₹50,000 crore today. “Over the last 11 years, Assam has received over ₹5,50,000 crore for development. Can Congress, which did not provide funds, develop the state?” Modi asked rhetorically.
Emphasizing infrastructure achievements, Modi inaugurated a bridge over the Brahmaputra, a data center, a transit campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati, and flagged off 225 electric buses. He contrasted BJP’s record with Congress, saying the latter built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra in seven decades, while BJP completed five new ones in 11 years.
Modi further accused Congress of being lenient toward those undermining national security, asserting that scams plagued defense deals under Congress, whereas today India is strengthening borders and infrastructure while ensuring security. He paid tribute to the martyrs of the 2019 Pulwama attack and recalled India’s decisive response during the post-2025 Pahalgam attack Operation Sindoor, highlighting the contrast with the Congress era.
He criticized Congress for supporting illegal infiltrators and undermining Assam’s identity. Urging BJP workers to secure the party’s return to power, Modi stressed that continued development and security in Assam are only possible under BJP’s leadership.
