Puducherry has been hit hard by Cyclone Fengal, recording a staggering 50 centimetres of rainfall overnight, marking the highest level in the last three decades. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy confirmed that the territory experienced 48.4 centimetres of rain within 24 hours until 8:30 AM on December 1, significantly impacting the region with severe flooding. “Puducherry has received 50 cm of rainfall, resulting in severe flooding. I am currently inspecting the flood-affected areas. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to evacuate those stranded in the floodwaters,” he stated while overseeing the situation.
The cyclonic storm, which made landfall on Saturday evening, led to widespread waterlogging and uprooted trees across various localities. Power outages were reported throughout most areas since late Saturday night, further complicating the response efforts. The Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have mobilized to assist with rescue operations, ensuring the safety of residents affected by the flooding.
As normalcy begins to return to Chennai, flight operations at Chennai International Airport resumed early Sunday morning after temporarily halting due to strong winds and heavy rainfall associated with the cyclone. Additionally, Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train services in the suburban districts are back to regular operations as of December 1.
Cyclone Fengal has remained stationary for the past six hours, sitting close to the union territory, approximately 30 kilometres north of Cuddalore and 40 kilometres east of Villupuram, as reported by the India Meteorological Department.
