A potential breakthrough in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran may be on the horizon, as Donald Trump has hinted at “good news” regarding a second round of peace talks. The development comes after earlier negotiations collapsed earlier this week due to uncertainty over Iran’s participation.
According to reports, sources from Pakistan, which is actively mediating between United States and Iran, have indicated that a fresh round of discussions could take place within the next 36 to 72 hours. These optimistic projections stem from ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing both sides back to the negotiating table.
When asked about the possibility of renewed talks, Trump responded briefly but positively, stating, “It’s possible!”—a remark that has fueled speculation about imminent diplomatic engagement. The current standoff between the US and Iran has been ongoing for nearly two months, with tensions remaining high despite intermittent ceasefire arrangements.
The renewed hope for talks follows Trump’s recent decision to extend the ceasefire, which was initially set to expire earlier this week. The extension reportedly came at the request of Pakistan, as mediators seek to create space for Iran to present a “unified proposal” that could serve as a basis for further negotiations.
In a post shared on his social media platform, Trump emphasized that while the ceasefire remains in effect, US military forces have been instructed to maintain readiness. He stated that the blockade would continue and that the ceasefire would remain in place until discussions conclude—“one way or the other.”
Pakistani officials have reiterated that their diplomatic engagement with Iran remains active, and the proposed 36–72 hour window reflects tangible progress in backchannel communications. Notably, despite strong rhetoric from both sides, there has been no significant military escalation, suggesting a cautious willingness to de-escalate.
However, not all signals point to indefinite patience. A US official, speaking to Reuters, indicated that the ceasefire extension may only last an additional three to five days, making it clear that Washington does not intend to maintain an open-ended pause without concrete progress.
As the situation evolves, the coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether diplomatic efforts can translate into meaningful dialogue or if tensions will once again intensify.
