Modi Urges Iran’s Pezeshkian To Resolve West Asia Conflict Through Dialogue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to pursue dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the escalating conflict in West Asia, while stressing the importance of protecting freedom of navigation, commercial shipping and the safety of seafarers.

Modi and Pezeshkian held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, their second meeting since August 31, when the two leaders met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek. The meeting came against the backdrop of continuing military tensions in West Asia, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and growing concerns over the safety of merchant vessels carrying Indian crew members.

According to a readout issued by India’s external affairs ministry, Modi reiterated New Delhi’s “consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy”. He also called for sustained efforts to establish lasting peace and stability in the region while safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce.

The Indian prime minister highlighted the safety and well-being of seafarers as a key concern. India has faced growing pressure from the conflict after merchant vessels with Indian crew members came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz. Ten Indian seafarers are among 16 Indians reported killed so far in the West Asia conflict.

New Delhi has summoned both Iranian and US diplomats over deadly attacks involving foreign-flagged merchant vessels carrying Indian crew members. The developments have added another layer of complexity to India’s traditionally close ties with Iran, as New Delhi simultaneously maintains strong relations with Gulf Arab states that have been targeted by Iranian military strikes.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has also created serious economic concerns for India, affecting the movement of energy supplies and fertilisers from West Asia. India’s strategic involvement in the development of Iran’s Chabahar port has meanwhile faced constraints because of US sanctions.

Following his meeting with Pezeshkian, Modi said India and Iran had discussed their friendship and the need to pursue a “long-term and win-win strategy”. He also described the Iranian president’s visit as particularly significant as it is Pezeshkian’s first trip to India since taking office in 2024.

The two leaders also reviewed bilateral ties and cooperation at multilateral forums. Modi thanked Iran for maintaining regular and high-level participation in BRICS-related meetings despite the difficult regional circumstances.

Modi said BRICS could help strengthen the “spirit of resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability” among countries of the Global South. Both sides also welcomed continued cooperation on issues of mutual interest at multilateral organisations, including BRICS.

Iran’s role could prove particularly important during the BRICS Summit on September 12-13, as member states seek consensus on a leaders’ declaration. Differences between Iran and the United Arab Emirates, which are positioned on opposing sides of the ongoing West Asia conflict, have already complicated consensus at several ministerial-level meetings ahead of the summit.

For India, Modi’s latest engagement with Pezeshkian reflects New Delhi’s effort to maintain diplomatic channels with Tehran while simultaneously pushing for de-escalation, protection of civilians and uninterrupted international commerce. The emphasis on dialogue, maritime security and seafarer safety underlines the direct impact the regional conflict is having on India’s strategic and economic interests.

The suspects subsequently travelled by road from Mumbai to Surat, where they boarded the Pune-Jaipur Express (train 12939). They were arrested in Kota on Monday morning while allegedly attempting to flee to Nepal via Delhi. The team of rail police along with local police apprehended them at Kota the next day, at around 10.15 am,” said a Western Railway official. Fresh clip shows men rushing to catch train Deep Dive How did police track the suspects after the Tiger Shroff shooting? Where were the suspects arrested, and which train were they on? Where were the Tiger Shroff shooting suspects allegedly planning to flee? Powered By FAQ Ask HT The CCTV footages from various spots of Surat railway station show the trio rushing their way to catch the train. Two of the three men are dressed in white shirts, while the third one is seen wearing a blue T-shirt, carrying a bag. They can be seen walking hurriedly outside the station. On the platform, the trio is seen rushing past the crowd to catch the train – two running ahead and the third one closely following behind. The CCTV footages became a crucial piece of evidence for the cops who were trying to nab the assailants in the high-profile case. How investigators tracked the assailants The three suspects were detained from the general coach of the Pune-Jaipur Express when the train arrived at Kota railway station. According to the RPF, Kota division received information from the Mumbai Police crime branch about the suspects travelling on the train in connection with the firing incident in Juhu. “The joint team checked the train upon its arrival and detained the three men before they could proceed further. Preliminary information indicated that the suspects had travelled by road from Mumbai to Surat before boarding the train,” said the railway official. Who are the assailants? The suspects have been identified as Rehan alias Sukka (18), a resident of Sonipat in Haryana; Ritwik Kurmi alias Roshan Fighter (22), reportedly from Bihar and currently residing in Andheri West and a juvenile whose identity has been withheld in accordance with legal requirements. However, the police later said that none of the three assailants is a minor. The third one was identified as Phool Singh, aged 18 years. One of the accused is said to be a driver working for app based aggregator Rapido. A spokesperson for the company said in a statement: “We are deeply concerned by the incident involving Mr. Tiger Shroff and his team, and we are relieved that he is safe. We wish him a swift recovery. We are aware of media reports mentioning an individual registered as a captain on the Rapido platform. He has not been active as a captain on our platform since 14th October. As is common in India’s larger gig economy, individuals may be registered with several platforms at the same time. On the day of the incident, the individual had used Rapido’s services as a customer”. The statement further read, “We are in constant touch with the authorities and are supporting them in their investigation. We responded promptly and have shared all the information requested from us. Rapido has zero tolerance for violence or criminal activity, and we will continue to extend our full cooperation.” The suspects are being investigated for their alleged involvement in the firing incident, and their culpability will be established through the ongoing probe.
