4.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Pakistan; no casualties reported

A moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Pakistan on Sunday, with tremors felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and surrounding areas. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) confirmed that the epicenter was located near Hassan Abdal, approximately 13 kilometers beneath the surface.

The tremors were brief but noticeable, prompting residents to evacuate buildings and seek open spaces. Despite the intensity of the shake, no immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage have been received. The NSMC initially reported a higher magnitude but later corrected it to 4.2.

This earthquake is the second to affect the region in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a 5.8-magnitude quake struck parts of Pakistan, including areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. While the earlier quake caused some concern, no major damage or loss of life was reported.

Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, advising residents to stay informed through official channels. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and prepared for any aftershocks that may occur in the coming days.

Pakistan’s location along the tectonic boundary of the Indian and Eurasian plates makes it susceptible to seismic activity. While the recent quakes have been moderate, they serve as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to larger, more destructive earthquakes.

Residents are encouraged to review earthquake safety protocols and ensure that their homes and workplaces are prepared for potential seismic events. Staying informed and prepared can significantly reduce the risks associated with earthquakes.
