Major Radhika Sen of the Indian Army has been conferred the prestigious 2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year award. This honor recognizes her exceptional efforts in promoting gender equality and empowering women in peacekeeping operations.
The award was presented to Major Sen at a ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the importance of gender perspectives in peacekeeping missions and expressed her commitment to continuing her advocacy for women’s rights and participation in conflict resolution.
Major Sen has been instrumental in integrating gender-sensitive approaches within the peacekeeping forces. Her work has included training peacekeepers on gender issues, ensuring the protection and support of women and children in conflict zones, and fostering an environment where female peacekeepers can thrive. Her efforts have been particularly impactful in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where she has been deployed as part of the UN Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO).
“Major Sen’s dedication to gender equality and her leadership in the field have made a tangible difference in the lives of many. She exemplifies the core values of the United Nations and sets a standard for peacekeepers worldwide,” said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, during the award ceremony.
The UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year award, established in 2016, highlights the vital role that women play in peacekeeping and recognizes the outstanding contributions of individuals working to advance gender equality within military contexts.
India’s Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army have lauded Major Sen’s achievement, calling it a proud moment for the nation. “Major Radhika Sen’s recognition on the global stage underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within its ranks. Her exemplary service is an inspiration to all,” said General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff.
This accolade not only celebrates Major Sen’s personal achievements but also brings attention to the broader efforts needed to enhance women’s participation in peace and security efforts globally.
