French President Emmanuel Macron faced an unusual challenge in New York City when traffic around the United Nations left his car stranded. After delivering a UN speech, Macron’s motorcade was blocked, forcing him to step out and navigate the streets on foot.
A video shared by French media outlet Brut captured the European leader attempting to persuade a New York Police Department officer to clear a path. When the officer explained that all routes were blocked, Macron appeared frazzled and reportedly placed a phone call to U.S. President Donald Trump, seeking assistance. According to the NY Post, Macron said, “How are you? Guess what, I’m waiting in the street because everything is closed for you.”
Despite the logistical hiccup, Macron maintained his composure, smiling and posing for photos with onlookers. In one lighthearted moment, a man bent down to take a photo with the French President and kissed him on the head. Macron reassured his security team, saying, “No, no, it’s okay, guys,” and shared a laugh with the crowd.
The traffic incident occurred during Macron’s high-profile UN visit, where France formally recognized the State of Palestine. In his address, Macron emphasized that this step aligned with France’s historic commitment to peace in the Middle East. He voiced concern that ongoing policies of the Netanyahu administration could threaten key accords, including the Camp David and Abraham Accords, and stressed the need for a transitional government in Gaza under the Palestinian Authority.
Macron called for the dismantling of Hamas through diplomatic and military measures and proposed the creation of a UN Security Council-authorized security force to maintain order in Gaza. His announcement marked a significant diplomatic move following similar recognitions by Australia, Canada, the UK, and Portugal.
Even amid the unexpected New York traffic snafu, Macron’s visit highlighted both diplomatic milestones and lighter, human moments, showing the French President’s ability to navigate unforeseen challenges with humor and poise.
