In today’s fast-paced world, many people turn to synthetic supplements for quick health fixes. But cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra believes that India’s own ancient Ayurvedic traditions hold the key to long-lasting wellness — without the risks of artificial alternatives. In a recent Instagram video, the founder-director and consultant cardiologist at Delhi’s Aashlok Hospital highlighted six powerful herbs that can transform your health naturally.
Tulsi – the sacred healer
Known as holy basil, tulsi is considered both sacred and medicinal. Dr Chopra calls it “seriously effective” for boosting immunity, improving lung health, and supporting gut function. Whether chewed raw, brewed as tea, or consumed as a liquid extract, tulsi is best taken in the morning for a calm and refreshing start to the day.
Giloy – the root of immortality
Giloy, also called amrita, has been used for centuries in Ayurveda for its immunity-boosting and fever-fighting properties. Dr Chopra suggests drinking one to two teaspoons of giloy juice or taking a tablet on an empty stomach each morning to protect the body against infections.
Moringa – the ultimate nutritional bomb
Moringa, or drumstick tree, is loaded with iron, calcium, protein, and antioxidants. “It really turns out to be the ultimate nutritional bomb,” says Dr Chopra. Adding moringa powder to smoothies, warm water, or taking it in capsule form can keep energy levels steady, improve focus, and support overall vitality.
Ashwagandha – nature’s stress buster
Famed for its calming and hormone-balancing effects, ashwagandha helps reduce stress, improve stamina, and promote restful sleep. The cardiologist advises mixing one teaspoon of powder or 300–600 mg extract into warm water or milk before bedtime for maximum benefits.
Turmeric – the golden healer
Haldi, or turmeric, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Dr Chopra recommends adding half a teaspoon to warm milk before bed for better immunity, faster recovery, and deep sleep. Regular use in cooking also provides long-term benefits.
Triphala – the detox powerhouse
Made from three medicinal fruits, triphala is a natural digestive cleanser and detoxifier. Consuming it at night — either as a teaspoon of powder dissolved in warm water or in tablet form — helps cleanse the gut and supports overnight detoxification.
Dr Chopra emphasizes that these age-old remedies are not just traditions but scientifically backed solutions for immunity, digestion, stress, and overall wellbeing. By incorporating them into daily life, one can achieve balance and health naturally.
