OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday announced the launch of GPT-5, the latest and most advanced version of its popular ChatGPT model. Described as “very smart, intuitive, and fast,” GPT-5 marks a major leap in artificial intelligence capabilities, with improvements across reasoning, creative writing, and real-time responses.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman shared that GPT-5 is an integrated model. This means users will no longer need to toggle between different models based on task complexity. “It decides when it needs to think harder or not,” he wrote, emphasizing the seamlessness of the experience.
GPT-5 has been made available to all tiers of ChatGPT users—including the free tier—which Altman called a significant step. “It provides everyone with PhD-level intelligence,” he noted. Users on the free plan will now experience a more powerful model with much higher rate limits. Meanwhile, paid subscribers using the Plus, Pro, and Team plans can access GPT-5 Pro, an even more advanced version. Enterprise and education users are expected to receive access next week.
Describing the model’s performance, Altman called GPT-5 “by far our most reliable and factual model ever.” He stressed that the AI can now respond more accurately to complex questions, write more creatively, and even code more efficiently.
Nick Turley, who leads the ChatGPT team, echoed the praise for GPT-5. In an interview with Bloomberg, he highlighted that the model “makes things up less often” and responds “a little bit more naturally” compared to previous versions. These updates are aimed at enhancing user trust and overall experience with the chatbot.
As the AI arms race heats up, GPT-5 represents OpenAI’s latest effort to maintain its leadership in the space. Its accessibility—even to free users—is likely to widen its global reach, enabling millions to interact with a model that “feels like talking to an expert in any topic.”
