MahaKumbh Traffic Woes

As millions of devotees continue to pour into Prayagraj for the MahaKumbh 2025, authorities have announced a ‘no vehicle zone’ ahead of the Maghi Purnima Snan on February 12. The decision comes after thousands were stuck in traffic jams stretching over 300 kilometres on Monday. The advisory is expected to streamline movement and prevent further congestion.

On Monday, thousands of pilgrims travelling to Prayagraj were left stranded for hours due to an overwhelming rush. The Uttar Pradesh police were seen advising people to turn back if possible, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar addressed the issue, stating that the delays were not due to mismanagement but rather the unprecedented number of devotees. According to officials, more than 40 crore pilgrims have already participated in the Maha Kumbh since it began on January 13, with millions more expected in the coming days.

Traffic restrictions for Maghi Purnima Snan
To prevent further congestion and facilitate smooth movement for devotees, the Maha Kumbh district administration has issued a detailed traffic advisory:

No Vehicle Zone: The entire Maha Kumbh Mela area will be a no-vehicle zone starting from February 11 at 4 AM. Only essential and emergency services will be permitted.
Citywide Restrictions: Prayagraj City will also implement the no-vehicle zone from 5 PM on February 11, with exemptions for emergency vehicles.
Parking Arrangements: Devotees travelling from outside Prayagraj will have to park their vehicles in designated lots along their respective routes after 4 AM on February 11.
Traffic Regulations Duration: These restrictions will remain in effect until the safe evacuation of devotees from the Mela area on February 12.
Kalpvasi Vehicles: The advisory also states that restrictions on entry and exit in the city and Mela area will apply to vehicles belonging to ‘Kalpvasi’ pilgrims.

Authorities urge visitors to plan their travel accordingly and use alternative transport options to avoid inconvenience. With millions still expected to arrive, the traffic situation in Prayagraj remains under close watch.
