Manipur Congress accuses Amit Shah and N. Biren Singh of contradicting each other amid violence crisis

The Congress party in Manipur has voiced its concerns regarding the conflicting statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh concerning the ongoing violence in the state. The party’s leadership argues that these inconsistencies not only create confusion but also hinder efforts to restore peace in the region.

At a press conference held in Imphal, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra pointed out the stark differences in how both leaders have characterized the situation. Shah described the crisis as an “ethnic clash” between two communities, while Singh attributed the unrest to illegal immigrants from Myanmar. Meghachandra stated, “These contradictions have led to confusion and stalled efforts to restore peace.” He also recalled Shah’s earlier comments during the 2023 no-confidence motion, where the Home Minister indicated that both a ruling by the Manipur High Court on the Meitei community’s Scheduled Tribe demand and illegal infiltration were factors contributing to the unrest.

Highlighting the frequency of Shah’s inconsistent statements over the past 19 months, Meghachandra criticized the Union Minister’s apparent lack of focus on addressing the ongoing crisis. He emphasized the need for coherent messaging from leaders in times of turmoil.

Moreover, Meghachandra raised questions about Chief Minister Biren Singh’s recent remarks made during his speech on Vijay Diwas, in which Singh claimed he had not received any intelligence inputs for the past 15 months. Meghachandra questioned, “Is he not the chief minister who handles the home department, which oversees intelligence operations? If not him, then who is managing the department?” He demanded clarity on Singh’s claims that certain agencies provided misleading information to the central government, asking, “Who are these agencies? Are they state or central agencies?”

The Congress leader characterized the current situation in Manipur as a reflection of “confusion and incompetence” in law enforcement and governance. He urged both the state and central governments to take decisive actions to restore peace and normalcy in the region. “People are losing their livelihoods, rights, and freedom to speak. The state is descending into chaos and anarchy,” he warned.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding Meghachandra’s accusations.
