In Bahraich, a district in Uttar Pradesh, communal tensions flared, resulting in violent clashes between two communities. The violence, which began late last night, has left local residents in fear and the police force on high alert to prevent further escalation.
The clashes reportedly began following an altercation over a religious procession. According to local sources, a disagreement over the route of the procession quickly spiralled into stone-pelting and property damage, forcing the police to intervene. Several vehicles were set on fire, and shops in the area were vandalized, creating chaos in the district’s market area.
As the situation worsened, the local administration imposed Section 144 of the CrPC, banning large gatherings to prevent further violence. Additional forces, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), were deployed to maintain peace and ensure the safety of the citizens.
Senior police officials are working closely with community leaders to restore order and de-escalate the situation. District magistrates and police commissioners held emergency meetings with religious heads to prevent any flare-ups. Several arrests have been made in connection with the violence, and the police are investigating the root causes of the unrest.
Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bahraich, Prashant Verma, stated that the situation is under control but added that extra precautions are being taken to ensure no further disturbances occur. “We are patrolling sensitive areas round-the-clock and monitoring social media for any inflammatory content,” he said in a press briefing.
The clashes have brought back memories of previous communal violence in the region, prompting authorities to remain vigilant. In response, the state government has directed district officials to maintain law and order at all costs, emphasizing that any individuals or groups found spreading violence will face strict action.
While no fatalities have been reported, several people have been injured, and many properties have been damaged. The police are urging citizens to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace in the area.
