LAB and KDA Meet in Ladakh, Urge Centre to Restart Dialogue on 4-Point Agenda

In a significant development for the Union Territory of Ladakh, leaders from the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDC), representing the Leh and Kargil regions, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), convened in Ladakh to discuss pressing regional issues. The meeting resulted in a united call for the Central Government to resume dialogue on a 4-point agenda aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by the region.

The agenda includes demands for constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule to protect Ladakh’s distinct cultural identity, enhanced regional autonomy through the strengthening of local councils, the protection of employment opportunities for the youth, and sustainable development initiatives tailored to the fragile ecosystem of the region.

Both the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) emphasized the urgency of these issues, stressing that the people of Ladakh have been waiting for concrete steps from the government since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. They argue that without adequate safeguards and autonomy, the region’s unique culture and way of life are at risk of being eroded.

The leaders also expressed concerns over the delay in the government’s response, noting that the region’s developmental needs are being neglected. They called for immediate attention from the Centre to address these concerns through constructive dialogue.
