US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in India for a high-profile diplomatic visit that underscores the growing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington. Rubio, who is travelling to India for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26, will hold a series of key engagements with Indian leaders, including extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Ahead of Rubio’s arrival, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed enthusiasm about the visit, signaling Washington’s interest in strengthening ties with India at a time of rising geopolitical tensions and growing concerns over regional stability. In a post on X, Gor revealed that he had spoken with Rubio before his departure and described the upcoming trip as an “important” one.
Rubio’s visit marks his first official trip to India since taking office as Secretary of State last year, making it a closely watched diplomatic engagement amid evolving global challenges. Speaking before his departure, Rubio highlighted the significance of US-India relations, calling India “a great ally and partner” and stressing that both countries have “a lot to work on” together.
Diplomatic sources indicate that Rubio’s discussions with Jaishankar are expected to cover a broad range of strategic issues, including regional security, economic cooperation, and pressing global crises. One of the major issues likely to feature prominently is the situation in West Asia and its economic fallout, particularly concerns over global energy supplies and market disruptions.
Rubio will also participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, where India will host foreign ministers from the United States, Australia and Japan. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi are expected to join Rubio and Jaishankar for the talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting will build on discussions held during the Quad ministerial in Washington in July 2025 and will remain focused on the grouping’s shared commitment to maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
The ministers are expected to review progress on existing Quad initiatives and explore ways to deepen cooperation in critical sectors such as maritime security, supply chains, technology, economic resilience and regional diplomacy. They will also exchange views on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific and other international issues of common concern.
Apart from the multilateral discussions, Rubio is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Indian officials. Foreign ministers from Australia, Japan and the United States are likely to separately meet Jaishankar and are also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay.
Sources familiar with the visit have indicated that Rubio may also travel beyond New Delhi, with possible stops in Kolkata, Agra and Jaipur as part of his India itinerary.
Rubio’s visit comes at a time when India-US ties continue to expand across defense, trade, technology and strategic cooperation, with both countries increasingly aligning on key regional and global priorities. The Quad meeting is expected to further reinforce that partnership while signaling the grouping’s commitment to regional stability amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
