West Bengal heads into a crucial second phase of polling on Wednesday, covering 142 assembly seats and featuring a high-profile contest between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in the Bhabanipur constituency. The outcome is being closely watched as Banerjee seeks a fourth consecutive term for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
A total of 1,448 candidates are in the fray for this phase, including 1,228 men and 220 women. Besides Banerjee and Adhikari, other prominent names include Firhad Hakim, making this round politically significant. The Election Commission has geared up for a massive electoral exercise, with over 3.22 crore voters eligible to cast their ballots.
The electorate includes approximately 1.64 crore male voters and 1.57 crore female voters, along with 792 third-gender electors. Notably, more than 4.12 lakh first-time voters aged between 18 and 19 are participating, while around 3,200 voters are over the age of 100, highlighting a wide demographic spread.
Bhabanipur remains the focal point of this phase, as Banerjee returns to a seat she won last year. In the 2021 elections, she contested from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram, winning the former but losing the latter to Adhikari. The BJP leader now challenges her once again, intensifying the political rivalry.
Security arrangements have been significantly tightened. According to officials, 2,473 individuals identified as potential troublemakers have been detained across the state as part of preventive measures to ensure peaceful polling.
The campaign for this phase has been intense, with top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath leading rallies. On the other side, Banerjee has engaged in grassroots outreach, including padyatras in Bhabanipur.
In the first phase, which covered 152 seats, the state recorded an impressive voter turnout of 92.72 percent, the highest since independence. The results for all phases will be declared on May 4, setting the stage for a decisive political verdict in West Bengal.
