Excessive Use Of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Linked To Increased Loneliness, Study Reveals

A recent study conducted by OpenAI has uncovered a concerning reality about excessive reliance on ChatGPT, particularly for companionship. According to the research, frequent users—often termed “power users”—report increased loneliness and emotional dependence on the AI. A parallel study by MIT Media Labs further supports these findings, raising questions about AI’s impact on human emotional well-being.

What Does the Study Say?

The study, titled “Investigating Affective Use and Emotional Well-being on ChatGPT,” examines how interactions with AI, especially through Advanced Voice Mode, influence users’ emotional states and behaviors. The researchers aimed to assess whether AI chatbots, designed to simulate human-like interactions, could inadvertently foster emotional dependence and reduce socialization.

Close to 1,000 participants took part in the experiment, which was conducted as a randomized controlled trial over 28 days. A key takeaway from the research states, “Overall, higher daily usage—across all modalities and conversation types—correlated with higher loneliness, dependence, and problematic use, as well as lower socialization.”

An MIT researcher involved in the study wrote, “These findings underscore the complex interplay between chatbot design choices (e.g., voice expressiveness) and user behaviors (e.g., conversation content, usage frequency). Further research is needed to determine whether AI’s ability to manage emotional interactions can be optimized without fostering dependence or replacing human relationships.”

The primary author of the study is OpenAI, with MIT Media Lab serving as a contributing research partner.

Can ChatGPT Experience Anxiety?

In a related study, researchers from the University of Zurich and the University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich explored whether ChatGPT could exhibit “anxiety” when exposed to violent prompts. The findings suggest that AI responses may reflect biases, potentially leading to racist or sexist outputs when under distressing stimuli. This raises further ethical concerns regarding AI’s role in emotional and psychological interactions with users.
