Sunscreen is often mistakenly considered necessary only for sunny vacations or summer outings. However, dermatologists stress that it is a daily essential—a true “lifelong investment” for skin health. Dr Kiran Sethi, a dermatologist, aesthetic, and wellness physician based in New Delhi, highlights that proper sunscreen use protects your skin from long-term damage and premature ageing.
Even on cloudy days or during brief outdoor activities, harmful UV rays penetrate the atmosphere, impacting the skin. Dr Sethi explains that neglecting sunscreen can lead to long-term consequences such as sun spots, wrinkles, accelerated skin ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer. “The sun exposure you had as a teenager can show its effects decades later,” she warns.
Choosing the right sunscreen
One of the most common confusions around sunscreen is understanding SPF. Dr Sethi clarifies that SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, indicates protection against UVB rays only—not UVA rays. UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn, while UVA rays penetrate deeper, contributing to premature ageing and pigmentation. “To protect against both types of damage, always check the PA rating, which indicates UVA protection,” she advises.
When it comes to chemical sunscreens, Dr Sethi notes that modern formulations, particularly those from European and Korean brands, are both safe and effective. “Not all chemical filters are harmful. While some sunscreens can be absorbed into the bloodstream, many advanced formulas are designed to be safe for daily use,” she says.
Another common misconception is that higher SPF offers dramatically better protection. “SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays, compared to 97% with SPF 30,” Dr Sethi explains. “The difference is minimal, so focus more on consistent application than just the number.”
Applying sunscreen correctly
Proper application is crucial. Dr Sethi recommends using a generous amount—roughly two full fingers’ worth for the face. A mere drop or two won’t provide sufficient protection. She also stresses wearing sunscreen whenever the UV index is 3 or higher, regardless of whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or rainy. Consistent daily application helps maintain healthy, youthful skin and prevents long-term sun damage.
Sunscreen is not just a seasonal cosmetic—it is a daily health investment. Following Dr Sethi’s expert advice ensures your skin stays protected, radiant, and resilient against the damaging effects of the sun.
