India has stepped up its humanitarian support for Afghanistan in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck the country’s eastern region on Sunday. A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit Kunar province, leaving at least 1,411 people dead and 3,124 injured, according to a statement from the Taliban. Entire villages were destroyed, and thousands of homes were flattened, particularly in the districts of Nurgal, Chawkay, Chapa Dara, Pech Dara, Watapur, and Asadabad, where 5,412 houses were reportedly damaged.
On Tuesday, India dispatched 21 tonnes of additional relief materials to the earthquake-hit areas, following an initial shipment sent on Monday. The aid was transported via commercial flights and includes generators, portable water purifiers, essential medicines, blankets, tents, and sleeping bags. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the details on social media and emphasized that India will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further humanitarian support in the coming days.
Rescue operations are ongoing across Kunar province, with local authorities, civil defense workers, and army personnel clearing rubble and assisting survivors. In areas inaccessible by helicopter, commando troops have been air-dropped to evacuate injured residents and transport them to safer locations. Emergency camps have been established in Khas Kunar district, with relief committees coordinating the distribution of aid, the care of survivors, and burial arrangements for the deceased.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported another 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck the same region on Tuesday, compounding the challenges for rescue teams. Several countries have pledged support, with part of the aid already delivered to local emergency relief committees. India’s humanitarian assistance, including 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food items sent on Monday, complements these efforts and highlights its commitment to supporting the Afghan people during this crisis.
