Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful address at the special session of the Parliament of Guyana in Georgetown on Thursday, stressing India’s unwavering commitment to democracy, humanity, and global cooperation. Speaking a day after receiving Guyana’s highest national honor, The Order of Excellence, Modi reiterated India’s stance against expansionism and its dedication to fostering peace and unity.
“Whether it was Sri Lanka or Maldives, or whichever country was facing a crisis, India has always provided assistance to them without any selfishness,” the prime minister said. He highlighted India’s role as a first responder to disasters, citing examples from Nepal, Türkiye, and Syria, where the nation extended aid without ulterior motives.
Modi underscored the importance of collaboration in shared spaces like the seas and outer space, stating, “We never believe in expansion. ‘Space and sea’ should be topics of universal cooperation and not of universal conflict. This is not the era of conflict for the world.”
Democracy and Humanity at the Core
The prime minister reflected on the deep-rooted values that shape India’s global approach, declaring, “Humanity first guides India’s decision-making.” He emphasized that India’s vision is neither expansionist nor driven by selfish ambitions but rooted in a commitment to fostering inclusive societies through democratic principles.
“In the spirit of ‘democracy first, humanity first’, India is doing its duty as a ‘Vishwa Bandhu’,” Modi said, adding, “Democracy is not just a system; it is in our DNA, vision, conduct, and behaviour.”
India-Guyana Relations: Shared Histories, Shared Goals
Addressing the historical ties between India and Guyana, Modi noted their shared struggles against colonialism and slavery. “In the last 200-250 years, India and Guyana have witnessed similar kinds of slavery, similar kinds of struggle. Today, both countries are strengthening democracy in the world,” he said.
The prime minister also expressed India’s inclusive perspective on island nations, stating, “We see island nations not as small countries but as large ocean countries.”
India’s Global Role as a Friend to All
Modi highlighted India’s ongoing support for nations in need, describing the country as a steadfast partner to the global community. “From Nepal to Türkiye to Syria, whichever country was hit by an earthquake, India has always acted as the first responder, and this is our tradition,” he said.
India and Guyana also signed key agreements to bolster their bilateral ties, reflecting the mutual commitment to fostering cooperation and growth.
