A 25-year-old AC mechanic has been arrested in Karnataka on charges related to alleged terrorist activities and prejudicial actions against national integration after police claimed he was in contact with Pakistani gangsters through social media platforms.
The accused, identified as Syed Abubakar, a resident of Islampur, was arrested by the Doddaballapur Town Police following a tip-off regarding his alleged online interactions with individuals based in Pakistan.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), police received information on August 20 that Abubakar was involved in suspicious dealings with persons from Pakistan. Acting on the tip-off, a police constable attached to Doddaballapur Town Police Station visited Islampur Circle and questioned the suspect. Officials said Abubakar failed to provide satisfactory answers and allegedly attempted to leave the area during questioning.
A preliminary examination of his mobile phone reportedly revealed that he operated an Instagram account under the name “sayedabudakar313.” Investigators alleged that he had liked and interacted with content related to Pakistan-based gangsters shared by another Instagram account identified as “Hammadmemon333.”
Police further claimed that the accused had uploaded videos featuring gangsters as Instagram status updates and had shared a copy of his identity card with the account. Investigators also said several photographs of pistols were recovered from his mobile phone, which they believe indicate an interest in firearms.
Authorities allege that the Instagram account with which Abubakar was communicating belongs to an international anti-social and radicalised individual. The FIR states that such interactions raised concerns about potential threats to national security and public order.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 113(3) (terrorist act) and 197(2) (imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Officials said further investigation is underway to identify and trace the individual allegedly linked to the accused and to determine the nature and extent of the communications exchanged through social media.
Police have not disclosed any evidence suggesting that the accused carried out or planned any violent act. The investigation remains ongoing.
