Five Dead in Gurugram Rain Fury: Electrocution, Road Mishap, and Open Sewer Claim Lives

Gurugram witnessed a night of tragedy on Wednesday as five people lost their lives in separate incidents triggered by heavy rainfall that lashed Delhi-NCR overnight. Among the victims were a graphic designer, an auto driver, airport security staff, and two labourers. Shockingly, three of the deaths occurred due to electrocution caused by water-logged streets and exposed electric poles.

One of the deceased, Akshat Jain, a graphic designer from Vishwas Nagar in Delhi, was returning to his residence in Vatika City, Sector 49, after a workout session at the gym. Near Ghasola village, he accidentally came in contact with a live electric pole and suffered a fatal electric shock. Bystanders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Jain’s family has blamed the power department for negligence, prompting a case to be filed at Sector 50 Police Station.

In another tragic incident, Pawan Kumar, a native of Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, was electrocuted near Genpact Chowk while trying to cross the road amid the rain. He allegedly touched a live electric pole and collapsed. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Kumar could not be revived.

A third electrocution victim, Prashant from Shahjahanpur, UP, was visiting his cousin in the Arjun Nagar colony. While walking after parking his motorcycle, he inadvertently touched a shop’s metal shutter, which had become electrified due to water seepage. He too died on the spot.

Around 3 AM on Thursday, another incident occurred when Vanshika, a security employee at Delhi International Airport, was returning home in a cab with two colleagues. After one colleague was dropped off near Sector 10, the driver proceeded toward Khandsa. Due to poor visibility caused by heavy rain, the car crashed into a divider. All occupants were injured and rushed to the hospital, where Vanshika was declared dead.

The fifth casualty of the night was 27-year-old Shailendra, an auto-rickshaw driver from Kannauj, UP. He tragically fell into an open sewer near Gate-2 of Sheeshpal Vihar, hidden under stagnant rainwater. His body was recovered later by authorities, and an FIR was registered at the Sadar Police Station.

Heavy waterlogging was reported across Gurugram, exacerbating the city’s long-standing drainage issues. The downpour not only flooded major roads but also exposed serious lapses in civic safety measures.
