The Jammu and Kashmir Police averted a major tragedy on Monday after detecting and defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The timely intervention prevented any harm, ensuring the safety of commuters and residents in the area.
During a routine check near the Palhallan area, police personnel discovered a suspicious object on the highway. The bomb disposal unit was immediately deployed and confirmed the object to be an IED. The police swiftly cordoned off the area, suspended traffic, and neutralized the device within hours.
Officials reported that the site of the discovery, approximately 30-40 kilometres from Gulmarg, is a popular destination for tourists, especially during this time of the year. The IED’s placement could have led to devastating consequences if undetected.
Terrorist Modus Operandi
IEDs have long been a favoured tactic for terrorists in the region. These devices are often planted along highways and triggered remotely or through pressure mechanisms to target security forces, army convoys, or VIP vehicles. While the specific target of this attempted attack is yet to be determined, authorities suspect it could have been aimed at disrupting highway operations or targeting security personnel.
The swift action by the police highlights their vigilance in countering such threats, but the incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir.
Recent Developments in the Region
This thwarted attack comes days after authorities took action under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, attaching properties in Shopian and Baramulla linked to individuals involved in terror activities. The attached properties reportedly belonged to families of active terrorists and their associates.
As the investigation continues, security forces remain on high alert, ensuring the safety of residents and tourists alike while intensifying efforts to curb terrorism in the Valley.
