Jharkhand Election: Voter turnout of 67.59 % recorded in 38 assembly seats till 5pm

The second and final phase of the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections witnessed a voter turnout of 67.59% across 38 assembly constituencies by 5 PM, according to official data. The strong turnout reflects significant public engagement in the electoral process, with incremental milestones observed throughout the day—47.92% by 1 PM and 61.47% by 3 PM.

Allegations and Polling Incidents

The polling day saw allegations of bias and swift action by the Election Commission. In Madhupur constituency, a presiding officer at booth 111 was replaced following complaints by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Dubey alleged that the officer favoured Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate and state minister Hafizul Hassan.

The Deoghar district administration clarified the action, stating the officer had violated Election Commission guidelines by standing too close to the voting compartment, raising concerns about impartiality. This replacement highlights the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring fair and transparent elections.

Political Leaders Speak Out

Kalpana Soren, a JMM candidate and wife of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, expressed confidence in the Mahagathbandhan alliance’s victory. She criticized the BJP for focusing on divisive rhetoric rather than development. “Hemant Soren has empowered women and led the state effectively as a young Chief Minister,” she said, adding, “We are definitely going to form our government.”

Similarly, Irfan Ansari, the JMM candidate from Jamtara, strongly criticized the BJP for its comments on infiltration and Bengali-speaking communities. “You have alienated Adivasis, Muslims, and Dalits who speak Bengali. People have rejected your divisive agenda,” Ansari said, asserting that the alliance would win all seats in Santhal Pargana with a significant margin.

In contrast, BJP leaders projected optimism. Amar Kumar Bauri, the Leader of the Opposition and BJP candidate from Chandankiyari, said, “This election marks a new dawn for Jharkhand. With the blessings of the people, the BJP will form the next government.” Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan criticized the current administration, accusing the JMM-Congress government of failing the state’s youth with unfulfilled job promises and governance issues.

Voting Day Developments

Polling concluded with the sealing of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) across constituencies, including Giridih. While largely peaceful, the day was not without incidents, including minor scuffles and allegations of bias.

This election is a battle between the ruling Mahagathbandhan alliance, led by Hemant Soren’s JMM, and the BJP, which is determined to regain power in Jharkhand. The results, set to be announced on November 23, 2024, will shape the political and developmental trajectory of the state for the next five years.
