The Indian Army has taken a significant step in its ongoing efforts to strengthen its defence forces with the successful rollout of the first overhauled T-90 ‘Bhishma’ tank. This milestone was achieved at the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, where the formidable tank underwent an extensive refurbishment process to extend its operational life and enhance its combat readiness.
The T-90 ‘Bhishma’, a modern variant of the Russian T-90 tank, has been a key component of the Indian Army’s armoured forces since its induction in the early 2000s. Known for its superior firepower, mobility, and state-of-the-art protective systems, the tank plays a critical role in India’s defence strategy, particularly in border regions where rapid mobility and firepower are paramount.
The overhaul project is part of India’s broader strategy to modernize its military hardware while maximizing the use of existing platforms. The extensive refurbishment process includes upgrading vital components such as the fire control systems, engine, and transmission, ensuring that the T-90 tanks remain battle-ready and in line with the latest technological advancements. The project has been executed under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative, emphasizing indigenous solutions and the enhancement of local defence manufacturing capabilities.
Officials from the Indian Army have expressed optimism that the overhauled tanks will provide a significant boost to the country’s armoured capabilities. The refurbished T-90s are expected to strengthen India’s posture in areas with high operational demands, such as the western and northern borders, where quick mobilization of armoured forces is critical.
This development also marks a significant achievement for the HVF, Avadi, which has been at the forefront of India’s defence production for decades. The successful overhaul demonstrates the facility’s growing capability to handle complex defence projects, further reducing the country’s dependence on foreign suppliers for the maintenance and modernization of its military assets.
The rollout of the first overhauled T-90 ‘Bhishma’ is being seen as a crucial step in India’s path toward self-reliance in defence technology, with more tanks slated to undergo similar refurbishments in the near future.
