Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that peace talks are actively progressing with both groups involved in the ongoing conflict. During a recent address, Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the turmoil that has gripped the northeastern state since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.
Shah confirmed that the government has opened channels of communication with both the Kuki and Meitei communities, who have been at odds over land, ethnic identity, and political representation. This violence has claimed over 150 lives, displaced thousands, and left large parts of the state in turmoil.
“We are in active negotiations with both groups to reach a peaceful resolution. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all citizens of Manipur,” Shah said. He also urged all parties to avoid provocations that could derail the fragile peace process.
The conflict stems from long-standing ethnic tensions between the hill-dwelling Kuki tribe and the majority Meitei community in the Imphal Valley. The government has imposed curfews and deployed additional security forces to prevent further escalation. Talks have included various stakeholders, including civil society leaders, political representatives, and security forces, to ensure a comprehensive resolution.
Shah assured the public that both sides had expressed a willingness to come to the negotiating table. The government’s peace initiative aims to secure a long-lasting agreement that addresses not only the immediate cessation of violence but also the root causes of the conflict. However, sources close to the negotiations warn that trust-building remains a complex challenge, and patience will be key in achieving a lasting peace.
As part of confidence-building measures, the government has already facilitated humanitarian aid to displaced individuals and initiated rehabilitation efforts. A fresh round of talks is expected to be held in the coming weeks, with high hopes for a breakthrough.
The ongoing crisis in Manipur has drawn nationwide concern, with calls for peace from across political and social spectrums. Amit Shah’s announcement marks a crucial step forward, though many acknowledge that sustained peace will require significant concessions and cooperation from both factions.
