Drugs Worth ₹42.38 Crore Seized in Mizoram, 3 Tripura Residents Arrested: Police

Mizoram police seized narcotics worth ₹42.38 crore and arrested three residents of Tripura in connection with the operation. The bust, which took place in the capital city of Aizawl, highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the drug trade in Northeast India.

According to police officials, the seized contraband included a large quantity of methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as “Yaba,” which were being transported for distribution. The operation was carried out following a tip-off about the movement of drugs from Myanmar into India through the porous borders of the northeastern states.

“We received credible intelligence about a large consignment of drugs being smuggled into the state. Our team acted swiftly and intercepted the vehicle carrying the narcotics,” said Mizoram Police Superintendent Lalbiakthanga Khiangte. “This seizure is a significant blow to the drug trafficking networks operating in the region.”

The arrested individuals, identified as residents of Tripura, are believed to be part of a larger syndicate involved in the cross-border drug trade. The police have launched an investigation to uncover the full extent of the network and identify other key players.

The narcotics were hidden in a sophisticated manner, concealed within legitimate cargo to avoid detection. This method is indicative of the increasing sophistication of drug traffickers who are constantly evolving their tactics to evade law enforcement.

Mizoram, due to its proximity to the “Golden Triangle” — the region where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet and a major source of illicit drugs — has become a key transit point for narcotics entering India. The state’s rugged terrain and numerous border crossings pose significant challenges for anti-drug operations.

“We are intensifying our efforts to monitor and secure the border areas to prevent such illegal activities,” Khiangte added. “Collaboration with other state and central agencies is crucial in our fight against drug trafficking.”

This seizure comes amid growing concerns over the rise in drug abuse and trafficking in the northeastern states of India. Authorities are focusing on strengthening border security, enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and conducting awareness campaigns to curb the menace.

The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are being interrogated to gather more information about their operations and connections. They are expected to face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which carries stringent penalties for drug trafficking offences.
