Aa well-known politician from Karnataka and grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, has been remanded to six days in custody with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) following his arrest on charges of rape. The decision was handed down by a Bengaluru court amid escalating public and political scrutiny.
Revanna, who holds a prominent position within the Janata Dal (Secular) party, was apprehended after a woman came forward with allegations of sexual assault. According to the complaint, the incident occurred earlier this year and was reported to the police last month, leading to an intensive preliminary investigation.
The SIT, constituted to ensure an impartial and thorough investigation, will be delving into various aspects of the case, including forensic evidence and witness testimonies. This move aims to address concerns about potential political influence over the investigation.
Revanna’s legal team has vehemently denied the allegations, labelling them as baseless and politically motivated. “We are confident that Prajwal Revanna will be exonerated once the truth comes to light. This is a targeted attempt to tarnish his reputation,” said his lawyer in a statement outside the courtroom.
The allegations have sparked a heated debate across Karnataka, with opinions sharply divided along political lines. Supporters of Revanna are rallying behind him, citing his long-standing service and clean record, while critics demand a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
The SIT has assured the public of a meticulous and unbiased investigation. “We are committed to uncovering the truth. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure a fair probe,” stated the head of the SIT.
As the investigation unfolds, the case is expected to have significant implications for Karnataka’s political landscape, especially with state elections on the horizon. Both the ruling and opposition parties are closely monitoring the developments, aware of the potential impact on voter sentiment.
