The Congress party, gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, has unveiled its first list of candidates for the crucial electoral battle. A total of 39 candidates were announced, marking the beginning of what promises to be an intense political contest. The announcement came following the party’s Central Election Committee meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday.
In a bid to bolster its electoral prospects, the Congress party has strategically chosen candidates from various states across the country. The initial list encompasses candidates from Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Telangana, and Tripura.
Of the 39 candidates named, 15 belong to the general caste, while the remaining 24 hail from SC/ST/minority backgrounds. This diverse representation underscores the party’s commitment to inclusivity and social justice.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, expressing the party’s resolve, stated, “…Our priority is to win the maximum Lok Sabha seats to defeat PM Modi in this next elections. Our target is to win the maximum number of parliament seats for the Congress party.”
The Central Election Committee meeting witnessed the presence of key party figures including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, and general secretary KC Venugopal. Notably, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi participated in the meeting via Zoom, showcasing his active involvement in the electoral process.
Amidst speculation surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi constituency, the party has yet to confirm his candidacy. The decision regarding the remaining states is expected to be deliberated upon in subsequent meetings.
The party’s next Election Committee meeting is scheduled for March 11, where discussions regarding candidates for the remaining states will take place, further solidifying the party’s electoral strategy.
