U.S. Army Private Expelled from North Korea Returns to U.S. Military Base in Texas

The aircraft carrying King touched down at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston at approximately 0530 GMT. Television footage captured a group of individuals disembarking from the plane at the base during that time.

Upon his arrival, King is expected to undergo a medical review at Brooke Army Medical Center, a hospital located at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. It is worth noting that this facility previously treated basketball star Brittney Griner in December following her release from Russian detention as part of a prisoner swap.

The U.S. government has outlined its plan for King’s return, which involves initial evaluation and subsequent reintegration procedures to facilitate his reunion with his family.

Travis King, aged 23, made headlines when he crossed into North Korea from South Korea on July 18 while on a civilian tour of the heavily fortified border. He was promptly taken into custody by North Korean authorities.

The status of any potential disciplinary action by the U.S. Army regarding King remains uncertain. Despite crossing the border without authorization while on active duty, the Army has not labelled him a deserter.

In contrast, North Korea appears to have treated his case as one of illegal immigration. The state-run KCNA news agency reported that King told Pyongyang he entered North Korea illegally due to disillusionment with the unequal nature of U.S. society.

The Swedish government, acting on behalf of U.S. interests in North Korea, facilitated King’s return by retrieving him from North Korea and bringing him to China.

According to the State Department, U.S. Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns met with King in Dandong, China, a city adjacent to North Korea. From there, King flew to Shenyang, China, and subsequently to Osan Air Force Base in South Korea before finally returning to the United States.

Notably, Travis King had faced two allegations of assault in South Korea, pleading guilty to one instance of assault and property damage as a result of damaging a police car during an outburst against Koreans, as per court documents. He was due to face additional disciplinary measures upon his return to the United States.

In July, King had completed his military detention and was awaiting U.S. military transport to his home unit in the United States at the airport. However, he chose to leave the airport and joined a tour of the border area, ultimately crossing into North Korea despite efforts by South Korean and U.S. guards to prevent him.
