Pope Francis is “resting” after a peaceful night as he continues his recovery from pneumonia, the Vatican announced on Thursday. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been in Rome’s Gemelli hospital since February 14 due to breathing difficulties, has been receiving medical care for pneumonia in both lungs.
According to the Holy See, the Pope used an oxygen mask overnight for the third time, aiding his recovery. While his condition remains serious, Vatican officials have assured that he is stable and under continuous medical supervision.
Missed Ash Wednesday but remains engaged
Francis was unable to participate in the formal Ash Wednesday celebrations in Rome, marking the start of Lent. However, he took part in a private blessing ceremony from the papal suite on the hospital’s 10th floor.
Across the world, Catholics, including those in his native Argentina, have been praying for his speedy recovery. The Pope, who leads nearly 1.4 billion Catholics globally, has remained absent from public view since his hospitalization. The Vatican has yet to release any photographs of him but has confirmed that he continues to publish texts and oversee certain responsibilities remotely.
Ongoing health concerns
Pope Francis has faced several health issues in recent years. In 2021, he underwent intestinal surgery, and he has frequently struggled with knee and hip pain, often requiring the use of a wheelchair. His current battle with pneumonia has raised concerns, but Vatican sources indicate that he remains strong in spirit.
As he nears three weeks in the hospital, Vatican officials remain hopeful about his recovery, with the Pope continuing to rest and receive medical attention.
