Michelle Obama has once again shown why she remains one of the most powerful voices in modern American discourse. Speaking candidly on her podcast IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, the former First Lady opened up about her much-discussed decision to skip Donald Trump’s second inauguration—and the storm of divorce rumours it ignited.
Michelle’s absence from the high-profile political event sparked frenzied speculation online, with many assuming it was a sign of marital trouble with former US President Barack Obama. Months later, Michelle is setting the record straight.
“My decision to skip the inauguration… you know what people don’t realise is that my choices were met with such ridicule and criticism,” Michelle said in the podcast episode. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason—they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart.”
She explained that choosing not to attend was deeply personal and tied to her need for peace and boundaries. “It took everything in my power to not do the thing that was perceived as right, but do the thing that was right for me,” she said, calling it a difficult yet necessary step.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Michelle emphasized, “’No’ is a full sentence. It’s so important to give ourselves permission to make decisions that protect our peace.”
To avoid last-minute pressure or guilt, Michelle shared a small yet symbolic step she took—refusing to even prepare a dress for the event. “If I am not going to do this thing, I got to tell my team, I don’t even want to have a dress ready,” she said. “Because it’s so easy to just say, ‘Let me do the right thing.’”
The episode also featured actress Taraji P. Henson, where the trio spoke about the importance of self-care, boundaries, and healing—especially for Black women facing constant societal pressure.
Social media users praised Michelle’s honesty and strength. “Michelle, you do you. That’s why we love you,” one fan wrote. Another added, “You are setting an example for us. Your agency matters.”
Michelle’s message was clear: choosing yourself is never the wrong decision—even if the world refuses to understand.
