From classrooms to Times Square, Earth Day 2025 unites the world under the theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’

Every year on April 22, millions around the world come together to observe Earth Day, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of the growing environmental challenges that threaten our planet. It is a time to reflect, act, and unite under the mission of educating and mobilising communities towards a healthier Earth.

In 2025, Earth Day carries the powerful theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, urging people across all sectors to champion renewable energy. The goal: to triple global clean energy capacity by 2030. This year’s theme underlines the pivotal role of clean energy in tackling climate change and restoring ecological balance.

Schools, communities, and organisations around the world are hosting events, workshops, and campaigns to amplify the message. In Prayagraj, for example, school children were seen holding colourful posters with messages urging people to “Save the Earth,” reflecting grassroots support for the movement.

The Earth Day movement began in the United States in 1970, thanks to environmental advocates like Denis Hayes, a student leader, and Senator Gaylord Nelson. What began as campus teach-ins quickly evolved into a national campaign that eventually gained international traction. The date, April 22, was chosen to maximise student participation, falling between Spring Break and final exams.

Fast forward to 2025, and Earth Day has grown into a global movement, supported by Earthday.org, which maintains an online map of local and international events, inviting individuals everywhere to participate.

Adding star power to this year’s initiatives is Antonique Smith, Grammy-nominated singer and climate activist, who serves as the official Earth Day Ambassador for 2025. Known for her work on Broadway and in film, Smith also co-founded Climate Revival, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering communities of colour and faith in the fight against climate change.

Smith will headline a performance of “Love Song to the Earth” live in Times Square, New York City, on April 22, in collaboration with EARTHDAY.ORG and other climate-focused partners. The performance is a symbolic reminder of the unity needed to address the global climate crisis.

As the effects of environmental degradation become more apparent—rising temperatures, depleting natural resources, and increasing pollution—Earth Day 2025 serves as a rallying point for global citizens to work together toward a sustainable future. Whether through education, activism, or clean energy transitions, the message remains clear: The power to protect our planet lies in our hands.
