Growing up together in the left-leaning suburbs of Chicago, Mary initially shared her brother’s Republican enthusiasm. But in 2015, during Bernie Sanders’ first presidential campaign, her political outlook shifted. After meeting Sanders on the campaign trail, she became one of his ardent supporters. A year later, she posted a smiling photo of herself shaking hands with him again, captioning it: “#tbt to when I met Bernie a year ago and had no idea who he was, and now he is the light of my life.”

Mary’s social media reflects this ideological turn. In one post, she jokingly captioned a campaign photo of Sanders with a small bird perched at the podium: “I was the bird.” She also posted feminist and left-leaning messages, including one that read “mood towards patriarchy,” and recently urged followers to support the Whitney Plantation, a New Orleans museum dedicated to the history of slavery, whose federal funding was cut under the Trump administration.

Despite their differences, friends of the family maintain there was no estrangement between the siblings. Mike Miller, a Chicago jeweler and early Turning Point USA supporter, said, “Mary was a devoted sister to Charlie. Her politics are her business.” Another friend remarked, “Charlie went one way, Mary ended up going the other. Their parents are pretty moderate conservatives.”

Mary, 29, graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2019 with a degree in art history, criticism, and conservation. She works as a gallery assistant and runs her own art consulting firm, Kick Art Services. While she avoided the spotlight compared to her brother, Mary carved out her own voice in art and politics—one that stood in stark contrast to Charlie’s high-profile conservative mission.
