Brazilian authorities on Tuesday arrested four military officers and a former high-ranking police official for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva’s government. Lula’s administration was democratically elected in October 2022.
The suspects are accused of conspiring to assassinate President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Details of the Alleged Plot
According to Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the plot involved military personnel trained in the army’s special forces and a retired police official. The aim was to disrupt the inauguration of Lula’s government and undermine Brazil’s democratic framework and judiciary.
“The actions, which peaked between November and December 2022, were part of a broader conspiracy to carry out the coup,” Justice de Moraes stated in his judicial order.
The arrests are part of ongoing investigations into anti-democratic activities following the contentious election and subsequent political unrest.
Bolsonaro’s Alleged Role
Earlier this year, judicial documents revealed that two senior military leaders under former President Jair Bolsonaro rejected a plan he allegedly presented to remain in power despite his defeat. The leaders reportedly warned Bolsonaro they would arrest him if he pursued the plan.
Bolsonaro, a right-wing politician, has been implicated in several controversies surrounding efforts to overturn the election results, although he denies involvement in the January 2023 riots by his supporters at government institutions.
Lula’s Response
President Lula, informed of the arrests early Tuesday, has yet to comment publicly on the matter. He is currently hosting the final day of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, where he is holding bilateral meetings with global leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden. Lula made no reference to the arrests during his opening remarks at the summit.
The arrests mark a significant development in Brazil’s efforts to address threats to its democratic institutions and hold accountable those involved in anti-democratic plots. Further investigations are ongoing.
