A sanitation worker was swept away in a canal in Kerala, prompting an extensive rescue operation that has now extended beyond 24 hours. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the worker, Rajesh Kumar, was performing routine cleaning duties near the canal in the Ernakulam district.
Eyewitnesses reported that Kumar lost his balance and fell into the fast-flowing canal, which had swelled due to recent heavy rains. Despite immediate attempts by nearby colleagues to rescue him, Kumar was quickly carried away by the strong currents.
The local authorities were alerted, and a full-scale rescue operation was launched, involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local fire and rescue teams. Divers and boats have been deployed, and drones are being used to scan the area for any sign of the missing worker.
“We are doing everything in our power to locate Mr. Kumar,” said District Collector S. Suhas. “The rescue teams have been working tirelessly despite the challenging conditions, including strong currents and poor visibility in the water.”
Family members and colleagues of Kumar have been gathered at the site, anxiously awaiting news. “We are praying for his safe return,” said a relative. “The authorities have assured us that they will not stop until he is found.”
The incident has sparked discussions on the safety measures in place for sanitation workers, particularly those working in hazardous conditions. Labour unions have called for an immediate review of safety protocols and the provision of adequate protective gear and training for workers.
“We cannot afford to lose more lives due to negligence,” said Ramesh Pillai, a representative of the sanitation workers’ union. “It is imperative that the government and local authorities ensure the safety and well-being of those who perform these essential services.”
