The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday published the draft electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, triggering widespread attention as nearly one in every five voters has been removed from the list.
According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa, the state’s voter count has dropped sharply from 15.44 crore in the previous roll to 12.55 crore in the newly released draft. This marks a reduction of about 2.89 crore voters, or 18.7 per cent of the electorate, after the enumeration phase of the SIR-2026 exercise.
The Election Commission clarified that the draft roll is not final and eligible voters whose names have been deleted still have an opportunity to get re-included during the claims and objections period, which runs from January 6 to February 6, 2026. However, voters are first advised to check whether their names appear in the revised list.
To verify their status, voters can visit the Election Commission of India’s Voters’ Service Portal and navigate to the “Special Intensive Revision (SIR) – 2026” section. By clicking on “Search your name in last SIR,” users can choose to search either through electoral details or via the last SIR e-roll.
Searching through electoral details requires information such as the voter’s name, age, district, assembly constituency, polling station number and a relative’s name. Alternatively, voters can search the last SIR e-roll by entering the state, district, assembly constituency and polling station details. Once the captcha is entered and the search is completed, the draft electoral roll will be displayed.
The Election Commission has also released a breakup of the deletions. Of the names removed, around 46.23 lakh voters (2.99 per cent) were marked as deceased, about 2.17 crore voters (14.06 per cent) were found to have shifted their residence, and nearly 25.46 lakh names (1.65 per cent) were identified as duplicates.
If a genuine voter finds their name missing, the EC has said it can be restored by submitting Form-6 along with a declaration form and supporting documents during the claims and objections period.
